MS Career Week / Job Shadow

Reality store is a program that our 7th grade students experience. It consists of community volunteers and the Elk Rapids Business & Professional Women organization assisting students in a career choice, understanding banking, budgets, housing costs, child care etc. Each student rotates through 15 different stations, sometimes rolling the dice to determine number of children, if an illness or unforeseen disability occurs… they then see at the end of the month if their choices lead to a savings of often times in debt. The student s really love this activity and it normally produces interesting conversations for several weeks.

Job shadow is a "spin" from a national take your daughter/son to work. It’s always the same day across the nation for 8th grade students to get a sense of what their parents or significant other adults do at work. You can get a lot more information about this program at the web page:  www.daughtersandsonstowork.org

Kendra Landry, left, an assistant to Dr. Dale Ackler at Mancelona Veterinary Hospital, watches as a Mancelona Middle School student listens to the heartbeat of a dog brought in by A.C.P.A.W. for a check-up, after the dog had eaten chicken bones.  Middle School students were job shadowing Dr. Ackler to see what it is like to be a veterinarian. The students watched as Dr. Ackler x-rayed the dog and administered medications. "The dog will be fine," Dr. Ackler said. The students said their visit to the clinic was interesting.  Other students job shadowed teachers at the high school, workers at McDonalds, and the daycare center.
