Communities in School

Mission Statement:

The mission of Communities In Schools of Mancelona is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Vision Statement:

Every child in our community graduates from high school, prepared for future education, work, and life.

CIS of Mancelona believes every child needs and deserves the Five Basics:

  1. A one-to-one relationship with a caring adult;
  2. A safe place to learn and grow;
  3. A healthy start on life;
  4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation;
  5. A chance to give back to peers and community

Since 2001, through a partnership with the Mancelona Public School District, CIS of Mancelona provides both prevention and intervention services to students and families with a primary goal of increasing graduation rates.

CIS of Mancelona programs were provided under the umbrella Community Resource Development, Inc., until November 2009, when CIS of Mancelona became a 501©3 nonprofit organization.  In November 2010, CIS of Mancelona achieved all CIS organization, business and site operations standards (TQS) and became recognized as a Nationally Accredited CIS Affiliate Organization.  CIS of Mancelona was the first affiliate in the State of Michigan to achieve National Accreditation.

By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS of Mancelona provides the link between educators and the community.  The result: teachers are free to teach, and students – many in jeopardy of dropping out – have the opportunity to focus on learning.
